Our Service

Who our learning disability and autism support is for

Kope-Medics provides specialist home care and community support for adults and young people with a wide range of learning disabilities and neurodevelopmental conditions. Our service supports people from the age of 18 upwards, and in some circumstances from age 16 through transition planning.

Every support package is built around the individual. We take time to understand the person, their communication style, their routines, what motivates them, and what they find difficult, and we build the care plan from that understanding.

  • Adults from age 18 (and from age 16 through transition planning)
  • People with mild, moderate, and profound learning disabilities
  • Autistic people with a range of support needs
  • People with co-occurring conditions including epilepsy, ADHD, and sensory processing differences
  • People who have behaviours that challenge
  • Individuals transitioning from children's services or residential care

Our Approach

Our approach to learning disability and autism support

We start with the person

Before any support begins, we invest time in getting to know the individual. We speak with the person themselves, their family, their existing support network, and any professionals involved in their care. We learn about their communication style, their sensory needs, their daily routines, what they enjoy, and what they find challenging.

Consistency matters

For many people with learning disabilities and autism, consistency is not a preference, it is a clinical and psychological necessity. We work hard to maintain consistent carer teams so that each person builds real, trusting relationships with the people who support them.

We follow the person's lead

Our approach is always to promote independence and self-determination. We support people to make choices, to build skills, and to participate in the activities and community connections that matter to them. We never do for people what they can do for themselves.

Positive behaviour support

Where a person has behaviours that challenge, we work within a positive behaviour support framework. We work closely with psychologists, community nurses, and other professionals to ensure our approach is safe and evidence-based.

Autism Support

Specialist autism support at home and in the community

We understand that autism presents differently in every person. Our approach to autism support is built around the individual's specific profile, their sensory sensitivities, communication preferences, routines, and interests.

Our carers and support workers receive training in autism awareness, low-arousal approaches, and communication strategies including the use of AAC devices, PECS, Makaton, and visual supports.

We support autistic people with a wide range of support needs, from those who need minimal support to maintain independent living, to those who require intensive one-to-one support throughout the day.

We support autistic people across the spectrum

  • People who need minimal support to maintain independent living
  • People who require intensive one-to-one support throughout the day
  • People with co-occurring learning disabilities, mental health conditions, or physical health needs
  • People going through significant life transitions such as leaving education, moving home, or changes in family circumstances
